Between 1861 and 1863, Germany’s first telegraph office was built in Französische Straße according to plans by Wilhelm Salzenberg and Adolph Lohse. The building was equipped with the latest technology of its time. Just one example: The pneumatic tube system enabled fast communication within the building.
The hall of the elegant atrium, an architectural masterpiece of 44 m in length and 19 m in width, served as a representative operating room. Over 300 telegraphic devices were set up in this room. The wires for the appliances were laid in lead pipes underneath the floorboards. Most likely, the telegraph office had the world’s first raised floor for data lines.
One of the best-known traditional German companies, Deutsche Telekom had its headquarters in Französische Strasse. The tradition of telecommunications was upheld and still characterizes the open workplace design of the modern development.
